This short self-guided hiking tour covers the first section of the Camino Frances/French Way and offers a great taste of the iconic Camino experience. It begins in St Jean Pied de Port in France and finishes in the city of Pamplona (Spain) famous for its Bull Run festival. Numerous culinary temptations along the way will distract you of any physical fatigue and make the journey even more rewarding. This part of the Camino is extremely well marked with the iconic Scallop Shell markings leading you every step of the way.

Day 1. Arrival at Saint Jean Pied de Port
Your independent hiking tour begins in the town of St Jean Pied de Port (France), located on the river Nive just 8km away from the Spanish border.

Day 2. Saint Jean Pied de Port to Roncesvalles (26km, 8,30hrs, +1250m/-540m)
The first day of this self-guided walking tour is the most challenging, as the route of the Camino crosses the Pyrenees in this section. You start with a steep climb following the Napoleon Route through orchards and old country houses and watch as you switch the rural landscape for Alpine style meadows. You pass beech woods as you advance to the border and the descent into the small village of Roncesvalles (Spain). Don’t miss to visit the beautiful "Collegiate Church" in Roncesvalles (or Borguete, subject to availability with hotels at the time of booking).

Day 3. Roncesvalles to Zubiri (22km, 7hrs, +90m/-550m)
Today’s independent walking tour route follows a section of the Camino crossing two beautiful mountain passes and gently passing serene beech and oak woods. You soon reach Espinal, revealing some breathtaking panoramic views of the countryside and the Pyrenees. The playful river Arga leads the way to Zubiri (or Akeretta, subject to availability with hotels at the time of booking) where your next overnight will be.

Day 4. Zubiri to Pamplona (20km, 6hrs, +0m/-250m)
The Camino continues to follow the river Arga toward hills covered in beech, oak, and Scots pine. Steadily, the landscape changes as it begins to show traces of human intervention - farmland, reforestation and last, the town of Villava. Your overnight is in Pamplona.

Day 5. Pamplona, end of the walking holiday
After breakfast, we bid you farewell and hope to see you again soon.

How to get to the beginning of the walking holiday:
St. Jean Pied de Port: From Biarritz (2h; 1 - Shuttle bus to Bayonne train station (Bayonne-Anglet-Biarritz Airport is located just 3 Km from Biarritz. However it is a much better option to go to Bayonne train station (not Biarritz). Take the STAB line 6 to Bayonne train station (direct). The journey takes approx. 20 minutes and will cost 1,5-2 Euro. See http://www.bus-stab.com. The bus stop is in front of the terminal. Alternatively, there is a taxi rank in front of the terminal: cost is 30-40€); 2 - Train to St Jean Pied de Port: There are direct trains from Bayonne to Saint Jean Pied de Port (1,30hrs ride): http://www.voyages-sncf.com/leisure/fr/launch/home/); From Paris (6,30hrs; Take a train to St Jean Pied de Port); 3 - Airport transfer Biarritz Airport to St. Jean de Pied de Port or Pamplona to Bilbao Airport (contact us for details).
