This self-guided walking tour will take you on a journey across vast plateaus, profound river valleys, and jagged canyons. The iconic peaks of the Dolomites will accompany you every step of the way giving you unmatched awareness of the alpine world in your surroundings. You will explore a famous thermal treatment center and charming mountain villages with their unique narrow streets and stone houses as you advance toward the ultimate destination of the independent hiking tour – the magnificent lake Garda. Day 1. Individual arrival at Meran
Arrival at the prominent SPA town of Meran. Check in your hotel and leave your luggage so you can explore this gem in the heart of South Tyrol. Explore the charming center or follow the footsteps of the iconic Princess Sissi along the 'Passer' walkway.

Day 2. From Meran to Nals (20km, 5-6hrs, +560m/-550m)
You start your independent walking journey following the Waal paths through delightful apple plantations until you reach a beautiful waterfall. You continue hiking through the hills of the Tisens area as you ascend to the small historic church of St. Christoph. Continue walking through the lovely chestnut forests and enjoy the views of the Etsch valley. The final point of today’s route is the secluded little village of Nals surrounded by vineyards and orchards. The Overnight is in Nals.

Day 3. From Nals to Kaltern/ Kalterer Lake (18km, 5,30hrs, +710m/-600m)
Today’s hiking route is dedicated to the numerous castles of the surrounding area. You follow a trail leading you from fortress to fortress in picturesque settings each one more beautiful than the last. In the afternoon as you advance on your walking trail you will witness a peculiar natural phenomenon - icicles formed in midsummer! Walking through orderly vineyards time flies as you pass the tower of St. George and soon reach Lake Kaltern.

Day 4. From Kaltern/Kalterer Lake to Coredo (1 km, 4,30-5hrs, +200m/-700m)
After a healthy breakfast, you catch the train to Mendelpass. Take the time to contemplate the magnificent view before you start to follow the self-guided walking route through the plateau towards the provincial and language border of Nonstal (meaning the Non Valley). You continue your journey through secluded small villages, gorgeous canyons, and magical small lakes and pass the pilgrimage site of Saint Romedio. You finally reach Coredo in the heart of Trentino where you will regain the feeling that you are in Italy.

Day 5. From Coredo to Molveno (15km, 4,30-5,30hrs, +700m/-400m)
This section of the independent walking route begins with a short transfer to the starting point. You will follow the famous ‘Way of St. James’ up to the Paganella pain. The path will take you through fairytale woods up to Cavedago and its picturesque triple-arched bridge. Your setting then gradually changes as you enter the wetland of a karst lake towards Andalo and further along toward the village of Molveno where your overnight will be. This particularly scenic village is located at the foot of the Brenta-Dolomites facing the magnificent lake of the same name.

Day 6. From Molveno to Comano Terme (15km, 3-5hrs, +390m/-900m)
Today’s route is particularly picturesque as you will see for yourself as you ascend to the mountain area of the Pradel by cable car. You will enjoy the company of the tall peaks of the Brenta group in the background as you advance to a typical mountain cabin (Refugio) where you can enjoy a traditional snack and contemplate the view. Later, you descend back to lake Molveno by cable car and advance toward the amazing green tarn Lago Nembia. You reach today’s endpoint, Comano Terme, with a scenic ride on a local public bus.

Day 7. From Comano Terme to Riva del Garda (10km, 3-4hrs, +400m/-800m)
For your last day on this self-guided hiking tour we have foreseen a particularly beautiful walk. You will start with the lush meadows of the valley of Lomason and ascend to Rifugio Monte San Pietro for a fantastic panoramic view of Lake Garda. Descend through playful curving streets, old archways and the well-preserved walls of the Tenno castle. You will finish your walk in the setting of olive groves and Mediterranean cypresses until you finally arrive at the shores of Lake Garda.

Tips
Saturday to Thursday (incl.) arrivals between mid-May and the beginning of October. Meran (Merano) is well connected by train to all major cities in Northern Italy and also Innsbruck and other major towns in Austria. Return journey from Riva to Rovereto (www.ttesercizio.it) by bus and then by train via Bozen to Meran, approx. 3 hours. Organised transfer from Riva to Meran available, cost EUR 59 per person (transfer Sat/Sun/Mon, Morning and Tuesday (occasionally), afternoon). Booking in advance required, payable on-site.
