Piedmont is the wonderland of Italy for getting a taste of delicious food, truffles, and magnificent local wines. Located between the Apennine and the Alps, the Langhe region is famous for the production of Tuber Magnatum (an exquisite white truffle) and Italy’s most distinguished wines: Barolo and Barbera. As you follow the self-guided hiking itinerary, you discover more and more ways to pamper your taste buds. You enjoy local delicacies such as praised cheeses, pastries and chocolates while you walk through a wonderful landscape of green hills, charming villages, romantic castles and feudal towers, vineyards and dense forests. You will be staying in small authentic villages soaking into the unforgettable local atmosphere.

Day 1. Arrival in Alba
Your independent walking tour starts in Alba (*easiest arrival through Turin or Milano airports; there are several trains daily from Turin to Alba and you must change either in Asti or in Cavallermaggiore (travel time: 1,30-2hrs; ticket 8-10 EUR). The wonderful medieval city of the ‘hundred towers’ is the heart of the Piedmont wine country. We invite you to explore the cobbled streets, visit some of the heritage sites and of course try some of the local delicacies.
*From mid-September until the end of November there is a supplement of 45 EUR per room per night for the hotel in Alba for all bookings that fall on Friday and Saturday (valid also for the night of Day 7 when you stay in Alba).

Day 2. From Barolo to Monforte via Novello (8km, 3hrs, +440m/-200m)
You begin your self-guided walking tour with a transfer to Barolo - the starting point of today’s route. Do not miss to visit the wine museum and the impressive castle. From Barolo you take the official Bar-to-Bar trail and soon reach the village of Novello. Then, advance towards the scenic hillside town of Monforte and explore its narrow streets to find yourself a delightful place to eat and taste some of Italy’s finest wines.

Day 3. From Monforte to Cissone via Roddino (15km, 5,30 hrs, +800m/-660m)
Today you will first reach the hamlet of Serralunga d’Alba and its magnificent landscape of orderly vineyards. Then, continue to Roddino where you can have an excellent lunch with local specialties to give you strength for the remaining section of the walk. You will finish the hike with a climb to the farm in Cissone.

Day 4. From Cissone/Bossolaschetto to Cravanzana (13 or 20km, 4 or 6hrs, +370-650m/-560-870m)
You can opt to shorten today’s walk with 6,5km by a transfer to Bossolaschetto (payable locally). Follow the charming countryside paths descending to the river Belbo and undertake a steep climb to the opposite ridge and enjoy stunning views of the Alps and Apennine mountains (weather permitting). Finally, follow the last section of today’s route through the forest passing Feisoglio and finally reaching Cravanzana. You can make a short stop in the traditional village of Serravalle Langhe along the way.

Day 5. From Cravanzana to Benevello (15km, 4,30-5hrs, +550m/-510m)
Take a breather with today’s leisurely walk and enjoy this magnificent cultural landscape. Gradually descend from Cravanzana towards the river Belbo and ascend to the hill guiding you to Montemarino. Take the time to contemplate the wonderful views of the Lower Langa, the Alps to the northwest and the Apennine to the southeast.

Day 6. From Benevello to Neive (17km, 6hrs, +530m/-680m)
After a healthy breakfast, you take the Bar to Bar hiking route from the hamlet of Benevello. Impressive farmhouses producing some of the best wines in the world are sprinkled across the landscape. Orderly vineyards give way to colorful forests throughout the way as the Langhe area in the low and the Alps in the background keep you company along the walking trail you follow.

Day 7. From Neive to Alba via Barbaresco (12km, 3,30-4hrs, +320m/-430m)
The last section of the independent hiking route follows peaceful country roads and playful paths with no significant ascents. Vast vineyards rule the surrounding landscape. You pass by the village of Barbaresco, home of some of the greatest wines. After you take your time to give the local wines a taste, you continue descending to Tanaro River through a charming forest. The last overnight is in Alba.

Tips
Daily departures between the beginning of April and mid-November. The walks are along vineyards, uneven footpaths, mule tracks and small gravel roads ("strade bianche"). The trails through the vineyards can get slippery, muddy and heavy-going when wet or after it has rained. The Bar to Bar route is well marked, while alternative trails do not always have markings. Best airport to arrive: Turin or Milano. There are several trains daily from Turin to Alba and you must change either in Asti or in Cavallermaggiore. Travel time is appr. 1,30-2hrs. Ticket costs appr. 8-10 EUR.
Accommodation
Selected 3/4* hotels are used in the larger towns, while in the villages and countryside we use cozy, friendly "agriturismo" (farmhouses) and inns, some quite renowned for their cuisine. In all the accommodation the rooms have private bathrooms and a good Italian breakfast is included each morning. Throughout the trip there are plenty of opportunities to taste both the outstanding local cuisine and a wide array of prestigious regional wines.
