The Fishermen’s Way / Rota Vicentina (classic version)

€565 per person

Spend a couple of days walking through the serras overlooking the Atlantic coast before spending four days following the trails used by locals to get to the beaches and hot fishing spots, walking from one fishing village to the next along the cliffs and through the dunes, witnessing the harsh coastal scenery and the wild and powerful natural landscape. Each night will be spent at a different family owned/managed guest house or small hotel in bedrooms with en-suite facilities.

Rota Vicentina, known as the Fishermen’s Way is a single track along the cliffs which can only be traveled by foot, and more demanding from a physical point of view. A challenge to a permanent contact with the ocean winds, the harsh coastal scenery and the wild and powerful natural landscape. Most days include short steep ascents from beach to cliffs. At times, tide levels will affect your route and make it necessary to walk some sections inland. The terrain is relatively flat with some scratchy vegetation or slightly overgrown areas inland.

Day 1
After transferring from Lisbon airport or Faro airport in the Algarve you will spend the first night near the Alentejo village of Sao Luis at a rural guest guesthouse, where you can relax on the terrace and take in the wonderful views of the “Alentejo Montado”.
Day 2
After breakfast at your guest house, a representative of our local partners will meet you to answer any last minute questions before transferring you 3km to the start of your first walk, 21 km (6-7hours) along a stage of the Historical Way through the hills between Sao Luis and Cercal, starting at the church of Sao Luis. At the top of Serra do Penedo, you'll get a great view over the plains, the Mira River and the village of Vila Nova de Milfontes. Heading north, the trail will lead to an amazing 17m waterfall, Rocha de Agua d'Alte, the highest in southern Portugal before continuing past the abandoned Rosalgar mines, now home to several colonies of bats, and the chapel of Fonte Santa de Cima before descending into Cercal do Alentejo. (accumulated ascents: +465 m; accumulated descents: -470 m)
Day 3
An 18 km (4-5 hour) walk along a stage connecting the Historical Way to the Fishermen's Trail. The day starts in wooded areas of the Serra do Cercal abundant with cork oaks and the most varied species of local flora. The route then descends through farmland on the coastal plateau passing close to the Forte da Ilha de Dentro before heading to Porto Covo finishing in the village square, Praca Marques de Pombal. (accumulated ascents: +200 m; accumulated descents: -310 m)
Day 4
A 20 km (6-7 hours) hike starting from the northernmost point of the Fishermen's Trail in Porto Covo heading south to Vila Nova de Milfontes. This is a fairly strenuous stage with several kilometres over loose sand. The trail heads south along the beach to reach the Forte da Ilha de Dentro overlooking the island of Pessegueiro. The trail then continues through the dunes behind the spectacular surf beaches, Aivados and Malhгo before reaching the cliff tops, popular with sea anglers. The trail takes you past Vila Nova de Milfontes' small fishing port before heading into the village to the old historic centre of the village passing the Forte Clemente. (accumulated ascents: +170 m; accumulated descents: -150 m)
Day 5
A 16 km (4-5 hours) easy walk on the Fishermen's Trail along the coast with the path winding through pine forests, sand dunes and along cliff tops. From Furnas award winning beach you can look back at the view of Vila Nova de Milfontes, the “Princess of the Alentejo”. You will pass some deserted beaches before arriving at the tiny village of Almograve. (accumulated ascents: +100 m; accumulated descents: -120 m)
Day 6
A 21km (6-7 hours) walk heading south from Almograve above the beach, where you can make a short detour to the little fishing harbour, Lapa das Pombas. The trail continues along the cliffs with panoramic views of the dunes. Storks can be seen nesting on the cliffs along this route. The trail then passes through the village of Cavaleiro and past the historic lighthouse of Cabo Sardгo, before ending the day in Zambujeira do Mar. (accumulated ascents: +210 m; accumulated descents: -200 m)
Day 7

Then, on through the dunes, farmland and woodland to the Praia da Amalia, where a stream cascades down onto the beach, before reaching Azenha do Mar. Perhaps you will want to try an amazing seafood meal (the fishing harbour is only 100 meters from the restaurant) as a change from your picnic lunch. After this you will head towards the Ceixe river estuary and reach Odeceixe, where you will spend the night. (accumulated ascents: +270 m; accumulated descents: -290 m)
