The self-guided hiking route in Bavaria and Tyrol in Austria and Germany offers some of the most spectacular views in the Alps. You will find yourself surrounded by countless towering peaks and massifs on one stage of the hike and immense alpine valleys on the next. You will navigate through the Karwendel National Park all the way to the Northern Karwendel Chain and finish with a cable car ride down to the valley of Innsbruck all in one tour.

Day 1 : Individual journey to Garmisch-Partenkirchen/surroundings
Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a German ski resort in Bavaria, formed when 2 towns united in 1935. It's a prominent destination for skiing and ice skating as well as hiking. The town lies near the Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak, with a 2,962m. Garmisch-Partenkirchen will touch you with its originality, its liveliness and its Bavarian charm. *Easiest arrival via Innsbruck and Munich airports (1,15-1,30hrs bus/train ride from both towns).

Day 2: Round trip high altitude path Höllentalklamm, The Hell Valley Gorge (12km, 5hrs,+1,090m/-180m)
You start your independent hiking tour in Höllentalklamm by walking to the foot of the Zugspitze through the alpine pasture Höllentalangeralm. You will be walking the high altitude path above the Hupfleitenjoch gorge and pass the Kreuzeck alpine pasture. Your overnight will be in Garmisch (Germany) which you will reach by cable car.

Day 3: From Garmisch to Schachenhaus, ‘Wetterstein massif’ (12km, 4,5 hrs, +1,170m/-30m)
After breakfast, you start your independent walking route by crossing a gorge to the foot of the impressive Wetterstein. You will begin a steep ascent to the Schachen castle, a worthy prize for your efforts. Don’t let the rather unpresentable look on the outside fool you, the interior is simply glamorous. The overnight will be in Schachenhaus (Germany).

Day 4: From Schachenhaus to Scharnitz/surroundings (20km, 7,5hrs, +900m/-1,800m)
Today’s self-guided walk is challenging, yet it reflects the essence of alpine hiking which makes it especially worthwhile. You will climb a pass to the border cabin and descend into Leutasch valley. You will witness a great variety of breathtaking sights - rocky landscapes, valleys and mountain passes. You have the option to cut the walk short by public transport. The overnight is in Scharnitz (Austria).

Day 5: From Scharnitz/surroundings to Halleranger Alm, ‘Isar spring’ (5km, 2,5-5hrs, +550 m/-0m)
An early transfer takes you deep into the Karwendel valley where the starting point of this section of the walking route will be. You will ascend to the Halleranger alpine pasture and from there continue to Überschalljoch. You will spend the next two overnights in Halleranger Alm (Austria).

Day 6: Day off or summit tour Karwendel massif (5km, 2-3hrs,+500m/-500m)
Today you can choose to have a rest from hiking at the alpine cabin or you can challenge yourself by conquering some peaks from the Karwendel massif. Whatever you choose, you will spend the day enjoying the iconic alpine landscape.

Day 7: From Halleranger Alm to Innsbruck, "Karwendel Crossing" (13km, 6 hrs, +1000m/-500m)
The last self-guided hiking day follows a picturesque high-altitude path across several ridges to the well-known Northern Karwendel Chain. A couple of sections require surefootedness and stamina. You catch the cable car from the summit station of Hafelekar and descend to Innsbruck (Austria).

Day 8: Individual journey home or extra days.
If needed - easy return from Innsbruck to Garmisch by train (appr. 1,30hrs ride).

Tips
The trek is available for Friday & Sunday arrivals only between mid-June and mid-September. To get to the starting point take train to Garmisch Partenkirchen from where you will have a few walking minutes or a short bus ride to the starting hotel. Return from Innsbruck to Garmisch by train, duration appr. 1,30 hrs. Demanding trekking tour with walking stages from 4,30 to 7 hours. Partly in high alpine territory therefore experience, sure-footedness and a good head for heights is required. Some shortcuts are available.
