Walk through dense forests, lush green valleys contrasting with the vivid colors of the vineyards and olive groves. Dramatically perched on the hills, you will be always followed by the silhouettes of the beautiful medieval towns. They are so perfectly preserved that it seems the time has stood still! Day 1. Arrival in Assisi
Plan your arrival in Assisi and make sure you have enough time to explore the city of St. Francis (easiest arrivals via Rome, Florence and Pisa airports, which provide convenient connections to Assisi/Spoleto). Many outstanding buildings and open places are waiting to be discovered among which is the crown of Assisi - the Basilica of St. Francis. The city center is small and could be easily covered by foot but do not forget that you are in the hilly part of Italy so your cultural stroll around will require your comfortable walking boots as well!

Day 2. Assisi to Spello (16km; 5,30hrs; +835m/-980m; + shorter option "Via degli ulivi" available too (12km; 4hrs; +215m/-350m)
You leave Assisi in the morning heading off to Spello. The trail zig-zags uphill and bit by bit a great panorama of the city behind you will show up. If you want to skip some of the ascending you can take a taxi to the Eremo delle Carceri - a marvelous hermitage that could tell many legends about the life of St. Francis. The hiking route continues along a trail through the oak forest under the slopes of Mount Subasio. The trek leads to the IX century Abbey of San Benedetto. Then a long walk downhill takes you to your final destination - the medieval walled town of Spello. Another colorful mixture of preserved architecture, cultural and artistic heritage. Hanged on the walls of the houses, fragrant flowers will please your senses and it will be hard to resist this enchantment!

Day 3. Spello to Foligno (7km, 2hrs, +70m/-120m or longer option of 21km; 5hrs; +550m/-550m)

You can visit Baglioni Chapel with it’s marvelous frescoes or head to Belvedere - a terrace with amazing panorama view to Topino valley. Today’s walk is gently winding between olive groves and vineyards and it takes you to the vibrant town of Foligno from where you enjoy the awesome views of the green ring of mountains and lush valleys. If you want to walk more in the morning you can opt for a very nice round walk via Collepino village.

Day 4. Uppello to Bovara di Trevi (14km, 4,30hrs, +590m/-590m)
After breakfast, you will be transferred to Uppello which is the starting point of the trek today. The start is a bit challenging with a steep climb and it takes you to XI century Rocca di Scandolaro castle. Continue along fresh oak forest towards Trevi. The oak trees will be slowly supplanted by olive groves and the grid of paths that crosses the land around Trevi is known as the “Olive trail”. You will be completely surrounded by peace and silence and this is why the area is called “a land of meditation”. Take some time to stroll around the paved steep streets of Trevi before continue across the medieval aqueduct which leads to Bovara di Trevi. There you will spend another calm evening before setting off for the upcoming hiking trails!

Day 5. Bovara di Trevi to Poreta (12km, 4hrs, +460m/-540m)
Today’s trail follows the official “Via Francigena” from Bovara di Trevi to Campello Alto and it reveals splendid views of the valley of Spoleto. Your independent walk passes by the hamlet of Lenano and then you reach the petite village of Poreta, from where you can extend your hike towards the castle above the village. After a short walk, you will be able to look and admire from above all of the serenity that covers this adorable Italian valley!

Day 6. Poreta to Spoleto (13 km, 4hrs, +450m/-450m)
You are already at the end of your Italian adventure and the farewell trail will take you to Spoleto - fascinating art town where medieval appearance is perfectly merged with the traces of the Roman period. The walk will first pass by the hamlet of Santa Maria di Reggiano where is located another beautiful monastery with frescoes dated back to XII and the XIV century. Pass by the hamlet of Eggi by following the old demolished railway line that leads to Spoleto. If you would like to prolong your last walking trek, then you can detour above Tessino stream via the medieval aqueduct. Not only that you are going to spend more time strolling through the serene forest but you will also enjoy the spectacular entry of Spoleto city from this side. Once in Spoleto you can celebrate the end of your Italian self-guided walking adventure with a nice dinner - try a dish prepared with the local pride - the black truffle!
