Basque Country & the Atlantic Coast

€1120 per person

An incredible inn to inn walking tour with amazing landscapes along the Atlantic Ocean’s Spanish Coast. The Basque Country is among the most unique regions of Spain and hides one of the oldest cultures of Europe. Our self-guided hiking adventure starts in Zumaia, famous for its impressive flysch cliffs, topped by a green countryside. The walking trail, dominated by the scenic coastline, will take you to some really remote parts of the Basque Coast, like Mutriku, Ondarroa, Leikeitio and Elantxobe. These are all small, colorful fishing ports with a strong and authentic identity, hidden amidst hills and ocean. In-between these places, the route offers beautiful viewpoints on the coast. The next destination of this self-guided walking tour is the Urdaibai biosphere reserve – an estuary, surrounded by mountains with emerald waters and golden sand. This is a natural setting of outstanding beauty and diversity, providing home to as many as 245 species of birds that can be seen here during the year. Urdaibai is a reflection of where nature, the ocean coast, and Basque culture intertwine. The town of Guernica is at the heart of this nature paradise, and precedes your arrival at the picturesque hermitage of Gaztelugatxe. The latter is perched on its peninsula, assailed by waves from the ocean! In the lively city of Bilbao, where your independent walking tour ends, you may explore the famous Guggenheim Museum of Contemporary Art.

Your self-guided walking adventure in the Basque Country starts in Zumaia. Zumaia's rich cultural heritage is evident in its historical architecture and museums. The Church of San Pedro (13th Century), with its Gothic style and stunning interior, is a must-visit. The town is also home to the Zuloaga Museum, dedicated to the famous painter Ignacio Zuloaga. *Easiest arrival via Bilbao Airport (appr. 2hrs by train (frequent services) with Euskotren, and also appr. 2hrs by bus (one change in Zarautz). Day 2: Zumaia - Deba (15km, 5,30-6hrs, +600m/-600m)
The absolutely magnificent Ruta del Flysch, a coastal trail from Zumaia to Deba, is well worth the effort for anyone visiting Basque Country. This will be your introductory hiking trail of the region. It’s also an alternate stage on one of the early stages of the Camino del Norte. This is a magical walking route above the flysch cliffs, known worldwide by geologists for their spectacular appearance and for the iridium they contain. The latter is a direct testimony for the impact of the meteorite which was at the origin of the disappearance of the dinosaurs. Apart from a few isolated farms, the route is rather wild and involves splendid passages above the ocean. You stay overnight in Deba. Deba is an attractive and historic resort town that combines heritage, prehistoric caves, pristine valleys, and the above mentioned "flysch" - rock formations of sediment which alternate shale, limestone or sandstone, and clay.

Day 3: Deba - Ondarroa - Lekeitio (25km, 6-7hrs, +910m/-910m + shorter options!)
Today you will continue walking along the famous Camino del Norte to the colorful port of Mutriku. The beaches of Mutriku and the surrounding cliffs are the town's most striking tourist attractions. Then the hiking route will continue on the edges of the cliffs, overlooking the ocean, taking you further to Ondarroa. After an ascent to the hermitage of San Lourenzo and the perched hamlet of Azterrika facing the ocean, you will arrive at the adorable port of Lekeitio and its island of San Nikolas. Apart from its gorgeous beaches, Lekeitio also has a colorful fishing port with brightly colored boats, surrounded by bars and restaurants as well as an impressive gothic church worth a visit. *If you wish to cut the mileage short (significantly), you can board a local bus from Deba to Mutriku or Odarroa (which is halfway to Lekeitio), or from Ondarroa to Lekeitio (which is in fact the second half of the walk today).

Day 4: Lekeitio - Ea (15km, 5hrs, +720m/-720m)
You ascend the Otoio, a summit covered in oak trees and overlooking the ocean. The path continues in the forest, to the charming little port of Ea.
5
Day 5: Ea - Elantxobe (12km, 3,30hrs, +590m/-520m)
Walk in the countryside to the impressive village of Elantxobe, clinging to the mountainside. From this village, hike back and forth to the Ogoño: incredible view of this 300 meter high cliff plunging into the ocean. Return to Elantxobe.
6
Day 6: Elantxobe - Guernica (20km, 6hrs, +530m/-600m + shorter option!)
Walk in the oak forests to the hermitage of San Pedro de Atxarre: panoramic view of Mundaka, the bay of Urdaibaï and the high cliffs of Ogoño. Descent towards the estuary, then Guernica. You can shorten the route by approximately 3 hours by taking a scheduled bus.
7
Day 7: Guernica - Gaztelugatxe - Bilbao (11km, 3,45hrs, +660m/-490m)
Short train trip through Mundaka and along the estuary to Bermeo. From there, climb to Burgoa and its panoramic view of the bay and the ocean. Descent and walk to reach the incredible hermitage of Gaztelugatxe, perched on its islet beaten by the wind and waves. (To access the last part of the walk leading to the hermitage, you have to book in advance, free of charge : https://www.tiketa.eus/gaztelugatxe/?lang=en Transfer to Bilbao. Night in Bilbao.

Tips
Daily departures (except Fridays!) between the beginning of April and mid-November. This holiday features comfortable rather than challenging walking, and is suitable for anybody who enjoys "a good walk". Nevertheless, you have a 6h30 walk day 3, but the 6h walk day 6 can be shortened by bus in the afternoon. We would recommend this tour from April to the end of October. You might have more rain in the beginning and the end of the season. With the oceanic climate it usually never gets too hot in summer.
