The Bay of Naples is among the most spectacular places to visit not only in Italy but also in Europe. Its diversified landscape is iconically shaped by the legendary volcano Mount Vesuvius and is a colorful explosion of natural and cultural gems. An immutable part of the Bay of Naples are the three magnificent islands – the iconic Capri, Ischia, and Procida. This self-guided hiking tour will take you around all three of them highlighting their natural and cultural merits. Fundamentally different in use, setting, and atmosphere, the islands offer a diverse experience for every individual taste and preference. Traveling from the small volcanic island of Procida with its colorful houses, through the green mountainous island of Ischia and finally to the chalkstone island of Capri with its famous ‘Faraglioni’ you are sure to create vivid memories to come back to in the future.

Day 1. Arrival in Procida (via Naples)
Individual arrival in Naples. Take the shuttle bus to the harbor and board a boat to cross to the island of Procida. Your host will pick you up from the port and drive you to your hotel. Enjoy your first evening in the Bay of Naples with a tasty meal in a local fish restaurant. As Procida is the least-known of the three islands, your walking adventure will start off the beaten track making the experience even more personal.

Day 2. The island of Procida (7-10km, 3-4,30hrs +150-300m/-150-300m)
After breakfast, you start your independent hiking tour with a circular walk to explore the most idyllic and authentic of three islands with its vibrant houses and charming fishing harbors. As Procida is a small island, it is possible to make a roundtrip walk in just one day. You will first walk the narrow streets of ‘Terra Murata’ up to the castle for some dramatic views. Then, you follow the itinerary to one of the most scenic places in Italy, the fishing harbor Marina Corricella. The final destination for today’s walk is the small harbour of Chiaiolella where you will have time to swim and enjoy some time on the beach. Those of you feeling energized can explore the tiny island of Vivara connected to Procida with a small pedestrian bridge.

Day 3. A walk in northern Procida (7-13 km, 3-4,30hrs, +50-100m/-50-100m)
This morning is dedicated to the northern side of the island, or for those of you that didn't have the chance to walk to the island of Vivara the previous afternoon, can do that instead. You can even choose to relax and enjoy the beauty of Chiaiolella. Whenever you are ready, take a boat to the island of Ischia also known as the ‘Green Island’ and the biggest one in the Bay of Naples. A preorganized taxi transfer will take you from the harbor to your hotel. You can leave your luggage to the driver to take to the hotel and enjoy some time in Ischia Porto, walk to the castle and wander around the beautiful streets of the old town center.

Day 4. A walk in southern Ischia (15km, 5,30hrs, +500m/-500m)
Today’s self-guided hiking route starts with a walk from the castle to the old town center. From there, you walk along the picturesque coastline of the south side of the island through a wonderful landscape of vineyards and a great view of the Bay of Naples and Capri. You gradually reach the small fishing village of Sant’Angelo and hop on the bus back to your hotel.

Day 5. The mountains of Ischia (7-11km, 3,30-5hrs, +350-700m/-800-900m)
After a healthy breakfast, it's time to explore the mountains of Ischia island. They are actually an extinct volcano occupying the central part of the island. The starting point for today’s independent hiking route is either in Fiaiano or in Fontana (detailed options can be found in your roadbook), both reachable by bus. You ascend to the Monte Epomeo (789m) and Capo dell’Uomo - the two highest peaks of the island. You descend through green forest areas, vineyards and a curious rock dwelling of monks and hermits with the amazing view of sea accompanying you along the way. Finally, you reach the village of Forio in the western part of the island. Take the bus pack to Ischia Porto from there.

Day 6. The island of Capri (9-12km, 3,30-5hrs, +400-500m/-400-500m)
An organized transfer by taxi takes you to the harbor as you bid Ischia farewell and head to the famous island of Capri. A favorite place of leisure of the Roman emperors, the island of Capri has never lost its charm and popularity since then. Off-season, you will travel through Naples instead. Your accommodation is in the lesser-known by tourists town of Anacapri. Travel up to the highest point of the island, the Mount Solaro, by cable car (‘funicolare’) form there for some gorgeous panoramic views. You will have the opportunity to take some amazing pictures of the island, the Bay of Naples, the Bay of Salerno and the Amalfi Coast. Whenever you are ready, descend along the ridge on foot down to the lighthouse on the western side of the island as you contemplate the playful turquoise waters of the Mediterranean sea. Today’s self-guided hiking route ends with the marvelous Grotta Azzurra. Take the bus back to your hotel (a walking route back is optional).

Day 7. Walk along the south coast of Capri (10km, 4-5hrs, +480m/-750m)
The last day of this self-guided walking tour is dedicated to the highlights of the island of Capri. Enjoy a picturesque circular hike around the South Coast, visit the wonderful Roman Villa Iovis with its amazing views and the beautiful less-known Villa Lysis. Gradually descend toward the intact coastline, explore the beautiful Arco Naturale and the iconic Faraglioni. Continue through the Gardens of August and the incredible twisting pedestrian way ‘Via Krupp’ to the captivating Marina Piccola where you can catch a bus back to your hotel.

Tips
Daily departures between April and October. Arrival: The tour starts in Procida; a pick-up service (included) is arranged from the harbour. Procida can be reached by berry or hydrofoil from Naples, the nearest city with an international airport /train station. The boat ride takes about half an hour. Departure: The tour ends after breakfast on day 8 in CapriI. A short transfer brings you to the harbour (included), from where you travel back by boat to Naples (or in case you extend your holiday to Sorrento or Salerno).
Mostly easy walks, but with nonetheless some walking uphill, sometimes on paths with rough surfaces. On some days some stretches are difficult for those suffering from vertigo (but NOT dangerous !). On these days alternative options are available. Extensions or shortcuts are also possible on many days.
