Join us on this self-guided hiking tour exploring the Chiemgauer Alps on the border between Salzburg, Tyrol, and Bavaria. You will be crossing the borders between Austria and Germany in the company of the peaks of the High Alps, across vast alpine meadows and small cozy holiday resorts. Take pleasure in the beautiful landscapes of the serene Lake Koenigssee, the large Lake Chiemsee, playfully called the “Bavarian Sea”. The Koenigssee glacier lake area is without a doubt one of the most beautiful in Germany and is a notable highlight of this independent walking tour.

Day 1: Individual journey to Schoenau/Koenigssee
Schönau am Königssee is an extremely beautiful Bavarian village with stunning views of the surrounding towering mountains. *Easiest arrival via Salzburg and Munich or Innsbruck airports. Reach Berchtesgaden (30-40min bus ride from Salzburg). Then short (15min) ride by bus/taxi to Schoenau/Koenigssee.

Day 2: From Schoenau/Koenigssee to Weißbach/Surroundings, "National Park Berchtesgaden" (19km, 5-6hrs, +500m/-500m)
You begin your hiking tour with a laid-back walk past lake Hintersee and imperceptibly continuing deep into National Park Berchtesgaden. Enjoy breathtaking landscapes along the way, views of the ReiterAlpe and the Hochkalterer mountains. You will move around alpine pastures and through the gorge Seisenbergklamm into the Saalach valley. A truly remarkable start of your independent walking tour.

Day 3: From Weißbach/Surroundings to Lofer, "Gorges and Pilgrims’ paths" (14km, 4hrs, +320m/-370m)
Today you will have a great chance to walk the longest passage cave in Europe, the Lamprechts cave. You will discover a natural swimming pool in the Vorderkaser gorge and explore the St. Martin home of the pilgrim church ‘Maria Kirchtal’. In the afternoon, your goal is to arrive at the picturesque town of Lofer (Austria).

Day 4: From Lofer to Reit i. Winkl, "Loferer Alm" (16km, 5,30-6hrs, +740m/-600m)
You will start the day with a cable car ride up to Loferer Alm where the starting point of the hiking trail to the Steinplatten massif is. Enjoy the abundance of changing scenery, from alpine pastures to mystical mountain forests. You will have great opportunities for a pleasant picnic at the picturesque Winklmoos Alm alpine pasture. Rest your feet on a public bus ride to the beautiful Reit im Winkl (Germany) where your next overnight will be.

Day 5: Rest day in Reit im Winkl or circular walk (9km, 3hrs, +250m/-250m)
Take a rest day in the famous ski resort Reit im Winkl. You can relax by the Weitsee lake or take a circular hike and follow our hiking tip through the Klausenbachklamm Gorge. In the afternoon you can pay a visit to the schnapps museum and stroll through the tranquil Bavarian village.

Day 6: From Reit i. Winkl to Unterwössen/Marquartstein, "Alpine pastures" (16km, 5,30-6hrs, +700m/-840m)
Today your self-guided walking route takes you to lake Taubensee. It is a peaceful unspoiled mountain lake cuddled in a little basin of Rauhe Nade on a 1138m altitude. From there, pasture by pasture, you reach the valley of Achental.

Day 7: From Unterwössen/Marquartstein to Prien/Surroundings, "Kampenwand" (12km, 4-5hrs, +730m/- 230m)
You will spend your last hiking day of this tour crossing the alpine pastures on Hochplatte and Kampenwand with views over the Lake Chiemsee. Hop from cabin to cabin following the trail beneath Kampenwand until you reach the cable car which will take you down to Aschau. A short train ride will bring you to the lake Chiemsee.

Day 8: Departure day.
Return to Koenigssee by train/bus, duration approx. 2,30 hrs. (1 change). Option for return transfer to Schoenau/Koenigssee - EUR 125 per person (min. 2 persons)! Reservation is only payable in advance at the time of booking the tour and valid for Saturday/Sunday rides.

The trek is available for Thursday, Saturday and Sunday departures only between the beginning of June and end of September! To get to the starting point take a train to Berchtesgaden then bus or taxi (short ride) to Schoenau/Koenigssee (appox. 15 min., according to starting hotel). Return to Koenigssee by train/bus, duration approx. 2,30 hrs. (1 change). Option for return transfer to Schoenau/Koenigssee - EUR 125 per person (min. 2 persons)! Reservation is only payable in advance at the time of booking the tour and valid for Saturday/Sunday rides. Daily walking tours between 4 to 6 hours with some short but steep climbs. Easier alternatives to the high altitude paths are given. You walk on good walking paths and forest lanes. Sometimes surefootedness is required.
