The mountain range has gained worldwide recognition as one of the most beautiful mountain landscapes on the planet as Italy proudly inscribed it in the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2009. This incredible inn-to-inn independent walking tour will take you through the gems of the Dolomites. The beautiful Lake Prags (Pragser Wildsee), the iconic Cortina d’Ampezzo, the breathtaking Drei Zinnen (Three Peaks) and many more places of natural wonder. Every day of the itinerary offers incredible views and picturesque panoramas making in one of the most beautiful treks in Italy.

Day 1. Arrival in Niederdorf/Villabassa or Toblach/Dobbiaco
Individual arrival at your hotel in the Hochpustertal region. There will be free unguarded parking near your accommodation for those of you making their way to the starting point of the hiking tour with their own transport.

Day 2. Villabassa/Dobbiaco – Pragser Tal/Valle di Braies – Plätzwiese (5hrs, +800m/-0m OR 5-6hrs, +800m/-800m)
The first walking day of your self-guided tour begins with a short transfer to the unbelievably beautiful Lake Prags with crystal clear waters. Here you get a first glimpse of the Pragser Tal (Prags valley) with its contrasting dark green tree crowns of the surrounding coniferous forests and the white vertical walls of the typical Dolomites mountain rocks. You follow a trail to the lush Rossalm alpine pasture and then down to the secluded mountain guesthouse of Brückele where you can have a rest. Reach the high plateau of Plätzwiese by local public transport to enjoy some great panoramas. There is an option for an easier start of the tour. If you choose this option, your driver will take you to the Tuscherhof guesthouse which will be your starting point. Walk along the river and pass the Brückele guesthouse. Pass the wooden Stolla hut and the nearby curious rock formations until you finally reach the Plätzwiese plateau.

Day 3. Plätzwiese – Strudelkopf or Dürrenstein (3-4hrs, +350m/-350m OR 4-5hrs, +800m/-800m)
Today’s section of the independent hiking tour is particularly picturesque. The Plätzwiese pasture is a starting point for many hiking trails which gives you the wonderful opportunity to choose between two possible routes. Depending on your preferences for today’s walk, you will either follow a trail to Strudelkopf (the shorter option) or Dürrenstein (the longer option). Both routes offer breathtaking views on the Hohe Gaisl, the Drei Zinnen, the Tofana, and the Monte Cristallo.

Day 4. Plätzwiese – Knappenfuss Valley – Gemärk/Cimabanche – Cortina d‘Ampezzo ( 2hrs, +0m/-475m OR 8hrs, +650m/-1425m)
Today you continue your hiking experience though the high-mountain plateau of Plätzwiese and go down through the Knappenfußtal to Cimabanche located between South Tyrol and Belluno. You have two options from there - either end the hike there and take the afternoon off by reaching Cortina d’Ampezzo by public transport or continue following the self-guided walking route notes to the Ra Stua hut and continue to Cortina d’Ampezzo passing the famous Col Rosa. Your overnight is in the stunningly located formal Olympic village of Cortina d’Ampezzo.

Day 5. Circular track; Faloria cable car (3-4hrs, +300m/-1175m OR 5hrs, +75m/-975m)
Today’s independent walking itinerary has foreseen two options. The longer one will take you to Forcella Faloria and the shorter one follows the picturesque Dolomieu Panoramic Trail. Both options reach Passo Tre Croci and descent to Cortina. Both options offer magnificent views of the surrounding Dolomite peaks.

Day 6. Cortina d’Ampezzo – Lake Dürrensee – Drei Zinnen (Three Peaks) – Rifugio Auronzo (3-4hrs, +1000m/-100m or 4-5hrs, +350m/-350m)
Today’s independent walk starts with a short transfer to the Drei Zinnen Viewpoint. From there you will hike through the Rienztal and to the iconic Drei Zinnen. Those three peaks are the most famous rock formations of the Dolomites. An easy hike will take you further to the Rifugio Auronzo hut where you can have a short break and take the time to contemplate your surroundings or make a circular hike of the Drei Zinnen. Catch a bus to to your hotel in Dobbiaco/Villabassa (ticket not included). You can shorter the itinerary by taking a bus to the Rifugio Auronzo at an earlier stage (ticket not included, EUR 6-7).

Day 7. Villabassa or Dobbiaco – Sexten/Sesto – Villabassa or Dobbiaco (6hrs, +575m/-975m)
We have saved a particularly beautiful hike of the valleys of the Pustertal to Sesto for desert. This section of the independent hiking route begins in Versciaco where you take the cable car up the Helm mountain. An amazing view of the Sextner Dolomiten will greet you at the top. Continue walking past the Hahnspiel, Sillian and Alpe Nemes huts as you advance toward Kreuzbergpass. Return to Villabassa/Dobbiaco by either bus or train and enjoy your last night in the Dolomites.

Tips
The trek is available to start every day of the week except Tuesday and Thursday, between mid-June and mid-September. For arrivals after Sept 05th an option will be given for Day 5, as the cable car Faloria may be closed. Moderate to demanding mountain walks on well-marked paths. Basic experience in mountain walking is recommended as well as an active, healthy general level of fitness and stamina. The paths are well maintained though sometimes stony or steep. Some walks can be extended or shortened.
Arrival: By car: By car on the motorway Brenner/Brennero (A22) to Brixen/Bressanone – take the exit Vahrn/Varna, then along the valley Pustertal/Valle Pusteria (SS49) to Niederdorf/Villabassa or Toblach/Dobbiaco, depending on the location of your hotel OR Drive along the Felbertauernstraße to Lienz in Eastern Tyrol (Austria) and then further into Italy through the valley Pustertal/Valle Pusteria to Toblach/Dobbiaco or Niederdorf/Villabassa, depending on the location of your hotel. By train: Take the train from Innsbruck over the Brenner/Brennero to Franzensfeste/Fortezza. Change trains for the Pustertal/Valle Pusteria - Lienz and get off either at Niederdorf/Villabassa or Toblach/Dobbiaco depending on the location of your hotel. Timetable available on: www.deutschebahn.de, www.oebb.at, www.trenitalia.com By plane: Low cost flights are available to Innsbruck airport, Sant’ Angelo - Antonio Canova airport in Treviso and/or to the Marco Polo airport in Venice. On request, we can organise transfers from the airport to the starting point of the tour. Parking: Free unattended parking facilities are included for the duration of the tour at the hotel of your arrival or at a nearby public parking area.
