Grisons’ Alpine cottages (Davos-St. Moritz)

A self-guided hiking trek along one of the richest cantons in Switzerland for both cultural treasures and biodiversity! Grisons is the only officially trilingual canton and the only one where Romansh language has official status. Beside the cultural outlook, the treks will meet you with alpine ibex, marmots, will pass through picturesque Walser settlements and a few of the most breath-taking mountain panoramas in Switzerland. This independent inn to inn trekking cottage tour will amaze you with the striking peaks and picturesque valleys through the Grisons Mountains. You start your self-guided hiking trip from the highest town in Europe – Davos. After a hike up to the Jakobshorn you walk through the Sertigtal to the famous Kesch Hut. The hike continues towards historic Bergün and past the Albula-Pass. At the end, after another night in a cottage you will reach the world famous city St. Moritz.

Day 1. Davos (arrival)
Plan your arrival in Davos - mountain town lying on the banks of Landwasser river. From there you will be transferred to the Alp Clavadel at the foot of the Jakobshorn. *Easiest arrival via Zurich Airport, followed by a train ride to Davos (2,30hrs, 1 change).

Day 2. Davos - Sertigtal (11km, 5-6hrs, +765m/-865m)
After a healthy breakfast get ready for your first trek. You can start the hiking journey with a visit of a public dairy. The trek starts steeply uphill up to the Jakobshorn, the local mountain of Davos and also famous ski resort. From here you will enjoy the first great view of the surrounding alpine heights. Your walk continues over the Jatzhorn and Tällifurgga into the Sertigtal. Give oneself a well-deserved evening rest and for dinner give a try to the local specialties.

Day 3. Sertigtal - Kesch cottage (11km, 5hrs, +1040m/-310m)
Waking up in Sertigtal considered as one of the most picturesque mountain valleys in Grisons. Today’s hiking trek starts on idyllic country path, pass through small stream just before you follow a steep trail up Sertigpass. You will admire the crystal calm waters of several small lakes before you reach the sparse Val Tschüvel. This night will be spent in SAC-cottage at the foot of Piz Kesch at over 2600m a.s.l.

Day 4. Kesch cottage - Bergün (18km, 5-6hrs, +330m/-1590m)
Enjoy your breakfast and start the day trekking down into the valley. Along the hike, you will pass several alpine cottages. As mentioned the biodiversity is represented by many species and on today's hiking trail you may be lucky to observe herd of alpine ibexes. The total population of these shy mammals is more than 5000 - only in Grisons Mountains! You finish today in the the historic townscape of Bergün where you will admire the finest touch of the local architecture of the region Engadine.

Day 5. Bergün - Jenatsch cottage (14 to 19km, 5-6hrs, +1065 to +1405m/-480 to -545m)
This morning you will be transferred to the Albula Pass from where you start the walking through the Val Bever towards the Jenatsch cottage. The charming surroundings will make you feel very small staying at the foot of the highest peaks of the Grisons Mountains. The friendly hut keepers will welcome warmly and if you wish, they will even heat up the sauna. At night, do not forget to go outside even for a minute just to observe sparkling starry sky above the Jenatsch cottage.

Day 6. Jenatsch cottage - St. Moritz (10km, 5hrs, +650m/-1160m)
Your last hiking day will start again with a steep uphill until you reach Fuorcla Suvretta. You will have one of the most stunning escorts along the trek towards your final destination St. Moritz in the face of the peaks Piz Picuogl, Piz Julier and Piz Albana.  St. Moritz is one of the most famous mountain resorts worldwide. The night you will spend on the Suvretta-height with panoramic views of the lakes of St. Moritz and Silvaplana.

Day 7. Departure day
A moment of farewell with this beautiful region after breakfast. Service ends.

Tips
Daily arrivals between the beginning of July and mid-September. Moderate to demanding hikes above the tree line, with an average duration of appr. 5-6 hours per day. The tour leads mostly through alpine and rocky terrain. Surefootedness and good level of fitness is required. Arriving in Davos, you have a transfer included to the first accommodation of Alp Clavadel. From the Mountain Hotel in St. Moritz by taxi to the railway station and from there with the Rhaetian Railway via Filisur back to Davos. Duration: approx. 1.30 hours
Accommodation
3x mountain cottages with shared facilities (Davos: 1x double room; Kesch cottage: 1x small dorm (8 beds), Jenatsch cottage: 1x dormitory (20 beds), 3x charming 3* hotels. Dorms are normally busy over weekends, but not that much during the week. Jenatsch cottage has a few double rooms (available on request, appr. 45-55 Euros per person). All breakfasts and 3x dinners (in the mountain cottages) are included. Sleeping bag/liner is needed for the nights in the huts.
