Treasures of the High Tatras (center-based)

€790 per person

A truly enjoyable self-guided hiking trek in the Slovakian High Tatras!  Challenging independent trekking tour with breathtaking scenery, all around the central part of the High Tatras near Hrebienok tourist resort. When we say High Tatras we mean majestic peaks touching the sky, deep valleys formed during the glacial activity 2 million years ago, dark turquoise mountain lakes (again of glacier origin), waterfalls, rare plants and animals (incl. chamois (mountain goats) and marmots). Exceptionally clean air and environment, great for self-guided rambling adventurists.  With the exception of one trek, all the others are “there & back” trails, allowing for bigger flexibility in case of bad weather conditions, if you wish to change the order of the hikes or if you simply wish to hike less on certain days.

Your arrival destination is Starý Smokovec, a part of the town of Vysoké Tatry in northern Slovakia. The most common public transportation to this point is train. From there, on days 2, 3, 5 and 6 you will be using the funicular to Hrebienok resort (5min ride; tickets included in the price) and back, where start some of the hiking trails. Day 2. Stary Smokovec/Hrebienok - Zbojnicka hut - Hrebienok/Stary Smokovec (12km, 6.30hrs, +700m/-700m),
Today’s independent walking trail will take you to Zbojnicka Chata (The Robbers' hut, at 1960m.), built-in Velka Studena Dolina (The Great Cold Valley), which is situated along the stream of Veliki Studeni Potok (The Great Cold River).  The area is surrounded by rocky peaks and magnificent lakes. The reconstruction of the hut was completed in 2000, and took place after a bad fire accident. Now the hut is operating all year round, hosting hikers from all over the world.

Day 3. Stary Smokovec/Hrebienok - Tery’s hut - Hrebienok/Stary Smokovec (14km, 7hrs, +730m/-730m)
The plan for today is to trek to Teryho Chata (The Tery's hut, at 2015m.), situated in Mala Studena Dolina (The Small Cold Valley). The valley is 4,5 km long terraced valley with old mining traditions, often visited by tourists. Gold and copper were mined here in the 19th century. Tery’s hut is the highest chalet operating all year round in the High Tatras. It was built in 1899 close to the Five Spiš Mountain Lakes - a set of five beautiful glacier lakes of different sizes. The most dominant peaks at the end of the valley are Prostredny Hrot and Ladovy stít (the Ice Peak) - the third highest in the High Tatras, and the Lomnicky stít as well.

Day 4. Stary Smokovec/Hrebienok - Belianska cave/Zelen pleso hut - Hrebienok/Stary Smokovec (32.2km, 7.30hrs, -617m/+617m; options to cut the route short using local bus)
Your day will start with a bus ride to Tatranska Kotlina. There you will have 2 options: 1) Visit The Belianska Cave, which is the only cave opened for the public in the High Tatras and certainly belongs to the list with the most visited caves in Slovakia. It is famous for its „music hall“, which got its name by the sound of falling drops on the water surface of the lake. The visitors of the cave can admire flow-stone waterfalls, pagoda stalagmite, pools and many other forms of cave decoration. The visitor's trail is 1370 m long with an elevation range of 125 m. There are 860 steps on the path. The visit lasts 70 minutes. On this day tour, you can do a combination with public transport from and to the nearest town/village and walk.; 2) Do the hiking trail (appr. 6hrs) Plesnivec hut - Zelene pleso hut - Biela Voda (by bus). Zelene pleso hut is situated in the valley of Zelene Pleso (Green Lake) above the lake, which is unusually green, and is surrounded by the magnificent summits of the High Tatras.

Day 5. Stary Smokovec/Hrebienok - Slavkovsky Peak - Hrebienok/Stary Smokovec (12km., 7hrs, +1140m/-1140m)
The trekking route today is to the summit of Slavkovský štít (Slavkovsky Peak, 2452m). It is the fourth highest mountain peak that can be reached on a marked trail in the High Tatra mountains in Slovakia. The independent hike to the top is one of the hardest. The hike is relatively strenuous due to a fairly high elevation gain within a short distance. The steep climb takes you through a rocky path. Rambling from boulder to boulder, you will walk on both sides of the mountain slope, finally reaching the Slavkovsky Peak and seeing stunning panoramic views around you.

Day 6. Stary Smokovec/Hrebienok - Velicke Lake (Sliezsky Dom mountain hotel) - Hrebienok/Stary Smokovec (15km., 5hrs, +680m/-680m)
The self-guided walking tour today will take you to the stunning Velicke Pleso (The Great Lake). This is one of the classic trekking circuits in Slovakia. The panorama of the vast Velické Lake and the Silesian House (unique 4* mountain hotel) is simply magical and certainly worth the effort to climb.  It lies at an altitude of 1665 meters above sea level. Velické Lake is also the largest mountain lake of this valley, although its maximum depth is only 4,50 meters.
