You pass Renggpass, Nidwalden with splendid views towards Lakes of Uri and Mount Rigi. The end of this trekking trip will be marked by the climb of “queen of the Mountains” – Mount Rigi. It has been featured in many works of art such as painting and literature, even Mark Twain depicted his travels to this marvelous area! It is time to write your own travelogue through an independent hiking journey in the heart of Switzerland!

Lake Lucerne hiking circuit in the heart of Switzerland

Day 1. Arrival to Lucerne
A perfect point to start the round hike is the city Lucerne named after the Lake. The fourth largest lake in Switzerland with its sharp bends and four arms is full of attractions and just looking at its blue waters gives the soul pure peace. You may take a walk around in the amazing souvenir and watch shops and enjoy a great day of relaxation before the hiking adventure starts! *Easiest arrival through Zurich Airport (10min train ride from the airport to Zurich and from there - frequent and direct train connections with Lucerne; appr. 45-50m ride).

Day 2. Lucerne – Alpnachstad (21km, 6,30-7hrs, +760m/-740m + shorter option!)
After a healthy breakfast, get ready to accomplish your first hiking challenge from Lucerne towards Alpnachstad. The hike starts from Horw peninsula to Mount Pilatus. An interesting fact here is that Renggpass (which you are going to pass through steep passage above it) was the only overland link since 1860 between Canton Obwalden in the South and Luzern in the North. The trail was used since the Neolithic age and was a site of many historical battles. This day will be full of pastoral landscapes and amazing panoramic views across the entire Uri Alps. Once you reach Alpnachstad you can take a well-deserved rest enjoying freshly prepared meals.

Day 3. Alpnachstad - Niederrickenbach - Emmetten (15km, 5,30hrs, +1135m/-715m + shorter option!)
Tаke the bus to Dallenwil and then the cable car up to Niederrickenbach. From there you continue towards the famous “wildlife-watching path” where you can experience some unforgettable moments by meeting species from the local ecosystem among which black grouse, chamois and ibex. Thanks to the many signs along the route you will even learn a lot about the flora. Once you reach Niederbauen you take the cable car to reach a village with the same name. Closer to it is Emmetten, located on the shores of Lake Lucerne.

Day 4. Emmetten - Brunnen (10km, 3hrs, +330m/-640m)
A short hiking trail awaits you today. You start from Emmetten and the final destination will be on just the opposite shore of the Lake - Brunnen - famous Swiss resort where even Winston Churchill spent his honeymoon! Of course, before reaching your final destination you have to do some hiking! You will pass by many breathtaking sites such as the stunning Risletenschlucht gorge. Your hiking trail will take you to Stützberg along the historic path to Volligen with arrival in Rütli. From there you continue by boat to Brunnen, passing Urnersee Lake.

Day 5. Brunnen – Rigi Kaltbad (14km, 4hrs, +675m/-445m)
A new day marked by stunning views and fresh air. Get ready after a healthy breakfast to conquer another walking trail! Take a cable car to Mount Urmiberg and set off to explore the Rigi area. From here you continue you walk via Gätterlipass on well-marked trails towards Rigi Kaltbad. The hiking trails will pass by many beautiful stops ideal for picnic with great panoramic views ahead! Once you reach the famous Swiss resort where you will spend the night, you will be thankful for all of the beauty you saw along the way despite the fatigue in the legs.

Day 6. Rigi Kaltbad – Küssnacht am Rigi - Lucerne (11km, 3,30hrs, +215m/-1215m + shorter option!)
The last day of the program will be short but definitely will leave you speechless. The hiking trail passes by one of the most stunning viewpoints in the mountains of Switzerland - Seebodenalp. You can walk slowly just to admire every single piece of this serenity - the old green forests, the lush valleys and the sparkling blue waters of Lake Lucerne in the distance. Undoubtedly a great finish of your self-guided hiking trip! You can jump on a cable car down to Küssnacht am Rigi if you wish to cut the descend short. From Küssnacht take a boat to reach Lucerne.

Tips
Daily arrivals between the beginning of May and mid-October. Some steep ascends and descends await you on the shores of Lake Lucerne. Even though most of the can be avoided by cable cars you need surefootedness and a good physical condition to go on this trip. Return travel by train from Küssnacht am Rigi to Luzern. Length: approx. 20 minutes
