Though the village of Lech is best known as an exclusive ski resort, it is also full of things to do in summer, providing various hiking trails and other activities for any taste and fitness.

The first hiking day is dedicated to visiting the  idyllic Formarinsee Lake, where the Lechweg Trail starts at an altitude of about 1793 m. Enjoy the stupendous view onto the sparkling mountain lake before proceeding further via the Lech-riverside path back to Lech am Arlberg amidst the mountain ridges.

Today's independent walk starts high above the Lech River through charming farmland and across lush green mountain meadows. Eventually the scenery will change, revealing the beauty of the wild Lech ravine. The route ascends gently through the high altitude forest to the Warth village, where a natural lake suited for bathing and the highest in altitude Alpine dairy and butchery farm will invite for a well deserved rest.

As you continue along the hiking trail, you will cross the stream Krumbach to Gehren, where you will find yourselves on Tyrolean soil. The route leads you uphill to Lechleiten, where a panoramic trail starts. Enjoy the marvelous views into the Lechtal Valley and the glistening turquoise colours of the river which is now far below. Walking down along numerous serpentines you will arrive at the riverbank and proceed along it through little hamlets all the way to the pretty village of Steeg (situated at the foot of the Pimig Mountain). Steeg has maintained many of its centuries-old traditions and handicrafts, exemplified by the Lorenz wood carving workshop and the Sojer cheesemakers, both of which offer guided tours.

Your self-guided hiking tour continues leisurely on the Jochweg Trail and always along the Lech riverside until you reach the beautiful village of Holzgau, which is characterized by its colourful painted houses. There a very special highlight awaits you with the crossing of one of Europe’s longest and most spectacular pedestrian suspension bridges (which can be bypassed if this experience is not something you would enjoy). The trail proceeds through blooming meadows and forest paths to Elbigenalp - the geographic center of the Lechtal Valley, and heartland of traditional wood crafts. It is known as the main cultural hub of the valley and has a proud tradition of handicrafts documented by the many frescoes and examples of stuccowork on local buildings.

Today a path through picturesque nature reserve leads you to Häselgehr, where we highly recommend you to pay a visit at the lovely parish church with its opulent interior before proceeding along the hiking trail uphill into direction of the Doser Waterfall. There are many legends and stories behind this mysterious nature phenomenon. The waterfall is not known for its size, but that it disappears in November and begins to flow again in April. According to tradition it rises every year on April 23rd and closes again on November 11th. After visiting this nature phenomenon, you will continue along a high altitude path with fabulous views over the river until you reach Stanzach - a tranquil village situated amidst an amazing mountain surrounding.

Today the Lech River presents itself once more from its wildest side: the hiking trail crosses a rugged river landscape past the Lechzopf and Forchach, where another suspension bridge awaits brave hikers to cross over. Walk the Johannesbrücke bridge and continue through the Moosberg nature reserve. Being a part of NATURA 2000 network it is still traditionally farmed and grazed (which allows several bird special to breed in the open meadows). Next you pass through Weissenbach - a long stretched village in the 'Tyrolean Lech' Nature Park. Here the river Lech has a very wide and mainly untouched river bed, where many rare plants, insects and birds live. Also here Rot Lech River flows into the Lech after passing deep canyons. Cross it and follow the gentle riverside paths until you reach the quiet little village of Höfen. In past centuries Höfen was known for special plastering work. Some can still be admired in the Maria Hilf church.

Continue along the Lechweg via a panoramic path to a beautiful viewpoint situated high up at the Costaries chapel. Past the glistening Lake Frauensee you will proceed into the ‚Pflacher Au‘. In this unique bird paradise many species of the river, the floodplain, the settlement area and for Tyrol rare marsh and water birds can be found side by side. In Pflach the Lech River feels like it is within your grasp.

On your last hiking day you will leave the Lech River and will walk through meadows and forests across the border all the way to Bavaria (Germany). Soon you can already make out in the distance the palaces Hohenschwangau and not the least the Neuschwanstein Castle - one of the most popular of all the palaces and castles in Europe (and worldwide, as long as this was the reason for the inspiration of Walt Disney to create the castle of Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty in Disneyland). The castle of the fairy tale King Ludwig II is worth a visit from Füssen either this afternoon or on your next day. There are regular public buses, taking only 10min to get there (pre-book a timeslot to visit in advance), but you can go with a guided day tour too. In Füssen the impressive Lechfall Waterfall finally marks the end of the Lechweg Trail.
