The Picos de Europa mountain range in Spain is considered the most remarkable on the Iberian Peninsula. This self-guided hiking tour will take you through flowery meadows, breathtaking gorges, charming traditional mountain villages and imposing limestone peaks. You will be stationed in the wonderful province of Asturias located on the north side of the mountain. This is a moderate independent walking tour with some more challenging options in the Eastern and Central Massifs of the mountain range. Do not miss the wonderful opportunity to try some local delicacies such as the peculiar blue cheese – Queso de Cabrales.

Picos de Europa self-guided hiking holiday in the Asturias, Spain.
1
Day 1. Arrival at Cangas
Individual arrival to Cangas de Onis, the main town in the Picos de Europa region of Asturia. Take the time to explore this delightful town after check-in. *Easiest arrival via Oviedo (regular buses to Oviedo from Bilbao), followed by a bus ride do Cangas. Those who arrive with rental car can park it for free in Cangas.

Day 2. Mirador de Ordiales (20km, 6hrs)
An early morning organized transfer will take you to the trailhead of today’s section of the self-guided walking tour. Today you will walk the Mirador de Ordiales hiking route starting from the Enol and Ercina lake area. You will walk past Huerto del Alemán and gradually ascend to a breathtaking glacier valley offering remarkable views over the western Picos. Another organized transfer will pick you up from the meeting point in the afternoon to take you back to your accommodation.

Day 3. Senda del Arcediano (12km, 4-4,30hrs)
After a healthy breakfast, an organized transfer will take you to the starting point of today’s hiking route near Collado Angón (806m). Follow the trail to the charming mountain village of Soto de Sajambre in the province of León. You will follow an ancient roman road between Asturias and the Kingdom of León. The route is particularly picturesque passing thought colorful meadows and forests. Your driver will be waiting for you in Soto de Sajambre to take you back to Congas de Onis through the remarkable Beyos Gorge.

Day 4. Transfer to Arenas de Cabrales and optional walks.
This day is meant for relaxation. You have the liberty to choose the time you would like to be picked up for your transfer to Arenas de Cabrale where your next hotel is located (approx. 25min drive from Cangas de Onis). There are two short hiking routes available from Arenas as well if you prefer not to skip walking. Arenas de Cabrale is probably the most popular village in Picos de Europa, famous for its iconic blue Cabrales Cheese. Do not hesitate to try it as well as visit the caves where it is made.

Day 5. The Cares Gorge (21km, 6-6,30hrs)
Today’s section of the independent walking tour will take you along one of the most popular routes in Spain. A short transfer will bring you to Poncebos where you will follow the trail to Cain along the iconic Cares Gorge. Have a well-deserved rest in the village of Cain and retrace your steps back to Poncebos. Where your driver will be waiting to take you back to Arenas de Cabrales.

Day 6. Poncebos - Sotres (via Bulnes) (10 km, 3,30hrs)
The starting point of today’s hiking section is again Poncebos. From there you can choose to take the funicular to the village of Bulnes (payable on spot) or walk there. Bulnes is one of the most interesting and authentic mountain villages in Picos de Europa. It has been accessible by funicular since 2001. From there you continue ascending to the Collado de Pandébano (1212m) through lush meadows enjoying breathtaking views. From there you descend to the mountain village of Sotres de Cabrales (1020m) where you next two overnights will be.

Day 7. Sotres - Pandebano - Naranjo - Pandebano - Sotres (14 km, 5hrs)
A morning transfer will take you from your hotel in Sotres to the Collado de Pandébano (1212m). From there you begin your ascend to Vega de Urriellu (1953m) admiring the spectacular views of the imposing limestone peak of Naranjo de Bulnes. You will return to the meeting point along the same route and your driver will take you back to Sotres for your last overnight on this independent walking tour.
