Picture rocky summits neighboring grass-covered hills and overlooking scenic mountain lakes. This independent walking tour is all about pristine nature and gorgeous scenery. You will cross the Austrian Salzkammergut area from West to East touring the ten most famous lakes of the region. Namely, some of those are lake Wolfgangsee, Mondsee, Irrsee and Fuschlsee. You will be given the opportunity to enjoy highlights such as the ‘White Horse Inn’ in St. Wolfgang, the Imperial summer residence in Bad Ischl and Hallstatt. The charming Ausseerland us also part of the itinerary you should not miss out on.

Day 1: Individual journey to Fuschl am See
The small town of Fuschl am See is on the south-eastern edge of the bright blue lake of Fuschlsee, surrounded by pine-clad mountains and perfectly placed to explore the Salzkammergut’s exceedingly great outdoors. Some of the loveliest footpaths start from the town’s doorstep, winding through pine forests and up to viewpoints, with panoramas over alpine lakes and peaks – all easily explored thanks to the barges, buses, cable car and cycling paths that traverse the landscape. *Easiest arrival via Munich and Salzburg airports. From Salzburg - by bus to Fuschl am See (30min). Alternatively you can reach Fuschl by bus from Bad Ischl (50min).

Day 2: Round trip to lake Filblingsee & Fuschl castle (14km, 5,30hr, +700m/-700m)
Today’s hiking trail takes you to the Fuschl castle through lake Filbilingsee. The castle is curious for having served as a setting for all the well-known princess Sissi films. A pleasant walk around the lakes will imperceptibly take you back to Fuschl.

Day 3: From Fuschl to Lake Mondsee (10km, 4-5,30hrs, +350m/-550m)
After breakfast, you take to the interesting Wartenfels’ruin to enjoy impressive panoramic views over lakes Mondsee and Irrsee. To maximize the effect and the experience you can also climb he Schober peak. The views of the Salzkammergut region from there are simply out of this world.

Day 4: From Lake Mondsee via Lake Attersee to Lake Wolfgangsee (15km, 5hrs, +400m/-350m)
Today you head to Unterach at lake Attersee by public transport in the morning. This will be the starting point of your self-guided walking route for the day. The trail follows the lake shores through the Burggrabenklamm and up towards alpine pastures to the peaceful lake Schwarzensee. You can relax with some homemade pastries at Lore’s cabin on the lake. From there, you descend to the Wolfgangsee lake (Abersee).

Day 5: From Lake Wolfgangsee to Bad Ischl (19km, 5,30 hrs, +200m/-250m)
This day is dedicated to a fabulous walk to Bad Ischl. First, you walk along the Wolfgangsee lake and through the natural reserve Blinklingmoos with amazing views of the lake and the Schafberg mountain peaks. Later on, you follow the playful Ischl river in the footsteps of Sissi to the tiny Nussensee lake close to the Imperial summer residence Bad Ischl.

Day 6: From Bad Ischl to Ausseerland (19km, 5,30 hrs, +450m/-200m)
Today you will hike up to the Blaa alp alpine pasture following the historic brine pipeline trail. You will reach the astonishing Loser massif into the Ausseerland by the end of this day’s independent walking route.

Day 7: From Ausseerland to Hallstatt (22km, 5,30-6hrs, +200m/-400m)
On this day’s self-guided hiking route you will reach the amazing world heritage town of Hallstatt by boat. But first, you will walk along the shores of the Traun river to the historic summer holiday location - Bad Aussee. From there, you will experience the untamed Koppental valley where you will have the option to visit he Koppenbrueller caves.

Day 8: Round trip Hallstätter Salzberg & Lake Gosausee (17km, 5,30-6hrs, +900m/-750m)
Get in touch with your inner explorer by visiting the distinguished Hallstatt excavation site, reachable by the Salzberg cable car. Hallstatt is one of the pillars of Western Iron Age archaeology, also an honorary namegiver to an archaeological era as well as the salt mine. Of course, the day is not dedicated solely to cultural activities. The impressive Dachstein massif and the rocky peaks of Gosaukamm will be an ever inviting rest for sore eyes throughout the whole day. At the end of the walk, you will head back to Hallstatt by bus.

Day 9: From Hallstatt to Fuschl am See (21km, 5,30-6hrs, +100m/-150m)
Today you take a boat ride across Lake Hallstätter See and continue your hiking route by walking along the east bank of the lake to Bad Goisern. You then walk to Bad Ischl along the brine pipeline and reach Fuschl on lake Fuschl by public transport.

Tips
The tour can start every day between mid-May and the beginning of October (except for Thursdays!). Best travel time: June-August. By train to Salzburg and by bus to Fuschl am See (approx. 40 min). Or by train to Bad Ischl and approx. 1 hr to Fuschl. Only a few minutes walk to the hotel. Bus fares from Mondsee to Unterach, from Gosausee to Hallstatt and from Bad Ischl to Fuschl are approx. 10 Euro per person. You mainly walk along lakes and across alpine pastures. Several low summits offer scenic views and therefore you should be surefooted. A good fitness level for ascents and longer walking stages up to 6 hours are required. On this particular walking tour you have the option of bringing your 'four-legged friend'. When booking, simply let us know the breed and size of your dog. Possible additional costs are payable locally on site.
