South Tyrolean wine & Alpine pastures trail

Picture orderly vineyards and apple orchards as far as the eye can see as you explore the wonderful South Tyrol following our independent walking route, starting from the famous SPA center Merano. Soak into the idyllic atmosphere of the wine-growing villages as you try the local production pairing it with suitable mouth-watering delicacies in one of the most distinctive regions of Italy. Enjoy a walk in the amazing city center of Bolzano (Bozen) as you gradually transit to the wonderful alpine setting of the Mölten (Meltina) plateau and continue the hiking tour in the company of vast pastures and high peaks. The iconic peaks of the Dolomites, the beautiful Sarnthaler Alps, the lush Etsch Valley and Lake Caldaro (Kalterer See) will accompany you throughout the tour offering some gorgeous panoramic views.

Day 1. Individual arrival in Merano
Your self-guided walking tour starts from the wonderful SPA town of Merano, a personal favorite of the legendary Empress Sissi. Take a relaxing walk through the town center and along the promenade of the peaceful Passer River.

Day 2. Merano - Nals (Nalles) (19km, 5,30hrs, +550m/-550m)
Today you follow the independent walking route along the Marlinger Waalweg path (the longest Waal of South Tyrol) until you reach the town of Lana, famous for its apple orchards. Enjoy beautiful views of Merano and the Etsch Valley along the way. Your route continues through dense forests ascending to Tisens, famous for its sweet chestnuts. Finally, you reach Nals (Nalles) with its three gorgeous castles: Stachelburg, Schwanburg, and Payrsberg.

Day 3. Nals (Nalles) – Bolzano (Bozen) (11km, 4hrs, +480m/-400m)
Today’s self-guided hiking route takes you on a high-altitude path as you ascend passing castles and beautiful palaces to be rewarded with some spectacular views of this iconic part of Italy. Explore the village of Eppan with its impressive and extensive wine-growing areas and enjoy some local wines before you take the bus to Bolzano (Bozen). Take the time to explore the Bozen city center in the afternoon, and drink a cup of cappuccino on the Waltherplatz Square.

Day 4. Bolzano (Bozen) - Mölten (Meltina) (15km, 5,30-6hrs, +860m/-1060m)
After breakfast take the bus to Jenesien to experience some of South Tyrol’s most beautiful aspects. Enjoy the amazing panoramic view from lake Kalterer See (Lake Caldaro) over the castles along the South Tyrolean wine route. Follow the trails across lush meadows and evergreen forests dotted with horses and cattle until you reach the high plateau of the Tschöggelberg Mountains where your final destination for the day is located - the secluded village of Mölten (Meltina).

Day 5. Circular walk Mölten (Meltina) (14km, 4hrs, +610m/-910m)
Today you take a self-guided circular hike around the charming village of Mölten (Meltina). Located 1100m above sea level, it is blessed with an astonishing natural setting. Enjoy the flower-covered meadows, the century-old larch forests, the lush alpine pastures with their frequent visitors - the grazing cattle. A truly picturesque walk accompanied by the Etsch Valley and the various mountain peaks in the background.

Day 6. Mölten (Meltina) - Merano (13km, 5hrs, +580m/-440m)
The last section of your independent walking route will take you through beautiful Alpine pasture the Leadner Alp. We encourage you to try the local homemade dumpling delicacies. Follow the marvelous panoramic trail up to the Trauttmannsdorff Palace. Do not miss to explore the wonderful parks and landscaped gardens before descending into Merano for your last tour overnight. Time permitting make sure not to miss to explore the  magnificent old town and the botanical garden.

Tips
Saturday and Sunday departures between the beginning of May and the beginning of October. You walk on well-maintained walking paths, on "Waalwegen" (old irrigation systems) and in sections on forest roads and asphalted paths. Technically an easy tour, for walking times of 4 to 6 hours a good basic fitness level is required. Meran (Merano) is well connected by train to all major cities in Northern Italy and also Innsbruck and other major towns in Austria.
