Trans Tyrol trek: Garmisch to Innsbruck

The self-guided hiking route in the Bavaria and Tyrol areas offers the most spectacular Alpine views. You will find yourself surrounded by towering peaks and massifs or immense alpine valleys. You will navigate through the Karwendel National Park all the way to the Northern Karwendel Chain and ride the cable car down to the valley of Innsbruck filled with fresh inspiring memories.

Day 1: Arrival in Garmisch-Partenkirchen
So your walking tour begins.
Day 2: Round trip high altitude walk in Höllentalklamm, The Hell valley gorge (12km, 5hrs, +1,090m/-180m)
You start your independent hiking tour in Höllentalklamm by walking to the foot of the Zugspitze through the alpine pasture Höllentalangeralm. You will be walking the high altitude path above the Hupfleitenjoch gorge and pass the Kreuzeck alpine pasture. Your overnight will be in Garmisch which you will reach by cable car.
Day 3: From Garmisch to Schachenhaus (12km, 4,30hrs, +1,170m/-30m)
After breakfast, you start your walking route by crossing a gorge to the foot of the impressive Wetterstein. You will begin a steep ascent to the Schachen castle, a worthy prize for your efforts. Don’t let the rather unpresentable look on the outside fool you, the interior is simply glamorous. The overnight will be in Schachenhaus.
Day 4: From Schachenhaus to Scharnitz (20km, 7,30hrs, +900 m/-1,800 m)
Today’s self-guided walk is challenging, yet it offers the essence of alpine hiking which makes it especially worthwhile. You will climb a pass to the border cabin and descend into Leutasch valley. You will witness a big variety of breathtaking sights - rocky landscapes, valleys and mountain passes. You have the option to cut the walk short by public transport.
Day 5: From Scharnitz to Halleranger Alm (5km, 2,30-5hrs +550m/-0m)
A transfer will take you deep into Karwendel valley where you will begin your walking trail for the day. You will hike up to the Halleranger alpine pasture and from there a relaxed hike up to Überschalljoch awaits you. You will spend the next two overnights in Halleranger Alm.
Day 6: Rest day or a tour around the peaks of the Karwendel massif (5km, 2-3hrs, +500m/-500m)
Today you can choose to have a rest from hiking at the alpine cabin or you can challenge yourself by conquering some peaks from the Karwendel massif. Whatever you choose, you will soak in the amazing alpine atmosphere.
Day 7: From Halleranger Alm to Innsbruck, ‘Karwendel Crossing’ (approx. 6 hours | 13 km | + 1000 m, - 500 m)
A marvellous high-altitude path crosses several ridges (passes) to well-known Northern Chain. A couple of sections require surefootedness and stamina. Afterwards you head on to the summit station of Hafelekar and glide majestically downhill to Innsbruck.
Day 8: Departure or extension

The trek is available for Friday & Sunday arrivals only between the mid-June and mid-September. To get to the starting point take train to Garmisch Partenkirchen from where you will have a few walking minutes or a short bus ride to the starting hotel. Return from Innsbruck to Garmisch by train, duration approx 1.5 hrs. Demanding trekking tour with walking stages from 4,30 to 7 hours. Partly in high alpine territory therefore experience, sure footedness and a good head for heights is required. Some shortcuts are available.
