Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a German ski resort in Bavaria, formed when 2 towns united in 1935. It's a prominent destination for skiing and ice skating as well as hiking. The town lies near the Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak, with a 2,962m. Garmisch-Partenkirchen will touch you with its originality, its liveliness and its Bavarian charm.
Day 2: From Garmisch to Mittenwald/Klais, "Partnach Gorge" (16km, 5hrs, +640m/-430m; *options to shorten the mileage!)
Your independent hiking tour starts with a particularly picturesque walk through the Partnach Gorge. As you follow your route to Klais or Mittenwald where your next overnight will be, the forest landscape is slowly replaced by soft hills and alpine pastures.
Day 3: From Mittenwald/Klais to Leutasch "Leutasch valley" (14km, 4hrs, +220m/-30m)
As you follow your route through the gorge encountering daring wooden footbridges observe the impressive stone masonry cut which helped form this impressive trail. Enjoy the contrasting walk along the Leutascher Ache river out of the forest and into the valley. You will walk past hamlets and meadows covered in flowers with the rugged peaks of the Wetterstein massif in the background.
Day 4: Rest day or a lake walking tour (11km, 4hrs, +350m/-350m)
Today you can choose either to relax or have a short self-guided walk along the Jakobsweg to the panoramic view at the Ropferstubn or climb to the viewing lodge at the Brunschkopf. Take a leisurely stroll around Lake Weidach or even higher - to the rustic Wildmoosalm. Return to Leutasch by bus for an overnight.
Day 5: From Leutasch to Ehrwald "Nature paradise Gaistal" (17km, 5hrs, +440m/-290m)
Today’s independent walking route begins with a short bus ride into Gaistal valley. You will experience the rustic side of Germany - the summer in Gaistal is enjoyed by Haflinger horses, brown and grey cattle as well as the Scottish Galloways. Follow the Ganghofer path up to Ehrwalder alpine pasture with some beautiful views along the way.
Day 6: From Ehrwald to Garmisch, ‘Eibsee’ (12km, 4.30hrs, +540m/-510m)
The last day of this independent hiking tour is dedicated to the Zugspitze summit itself. You ascend to the foothills of the summit from where you can take a cable car up to the very top. No view can keep up with the 360° panorama on the Zugspitze summit. Where else can you see 400 mountain peaks in four countries? The tour ends at the beautiful lake Eibsee with a breathtaking panoramic view. Take the Zugspitz train back to Garmisch for your last overnight.
