Day 1: Arrive in San Sebastian in La Gomera (via Tenerife)
N.B. Most people arrive in La Gomera by ferry from Tenerife! Potentially you may opt to extend your stay in Tenerife before going to La Gomera (check our walk in Tenerife too HERE). From
Tenerife South Airport there are regular buses (25min ride) or taxis (20min ride) to Los Cristianos harbor. From
Tenerife North Airport the bus ride to Los Cristianos harbor takes 1,30hrs (1hr by taxi). From Los Cristianos harbor (Tenerife) you need to take a ferry to La Gomera (appr. 50-60min journey; timetables on the websites of the ferry companies Fred Olsen Express and Naviera Armas). Your first hotel in San Sebastian in La Gomera will be appr. 5min walk from the harbor itself.

Day 2: San Sebastián - Alto del Contadero - Hermigua (9km, 3,30hrs, +80m/-1175m)
Your self-guided walking adventure in La Gomera begins with the PR LG 3 Trail. It starts from Alto del Contadero and immediately enters a dense laurel forest with ancient, Tertiary-era vegetation, creating a "magical" atmosphere. The path descends steadily through twisted trunks and giant ferns to El Cedro, a tiny, seven-house village within the forest. The hiking trail then continues through the Barranco del Cedro ravine in the Garajonaj National Park, ending at the northern, agriculturally traditional village of Hermigua, which is humorously described as having "the best climate in the world."
3
Day 3: Hermigua - Agulo - Vallehermoso (13km, 4,30hrs, +740m/-740m)
Today's walk begins in Agulo, a highly-regarded village known for its superb views of Tenerife and its (in fact Spain's too) highest peak Pico del Teide. The hiking trail immediately climbs the Agulo cliff to the Mirador de Abrante, a stunning, overhanging viewpoint offering even more spectacular views of Teide. The route then crosses the rural heart of La Gomera, passing through small villages like La Rosa, with the island of La Palma visible on the northern horizon. After reaching the highest point at Cruz del Tierno, the path descends sharply towards Vallehermoso, concluding the journey at the foot of the magnificent rock formation, Roque Cano (unique icon of Vallehermoso).
4
Day 4: Vallehermoso - Santa Clara & Cumbre Chijere - Vallehermoso (10km, 3,30-4hrs, +560m/-760m)
A highly rewarding walk expects you today, offering epic, multi-island panoramic views from a high ridge, followed by a cooling swim at the coast. The walk begins in the village itself and follows a scenic, old panoramic path that climbs to the Santa Clara chapel and the Cumbre Chijeré ridge, passing through scrubland and pasture trees. From the ridge, you are rewarded with magnificent views over the northern palm valley, the unique Roque Organos (a spectacular basalt rock formation), and the majestic Pico del Teide on Tenerife. The hiking day concludes with a descent to the coast, where you can take a refreshing dip in the sea pools of Vallehermoso.
5
Day 5: Vallehermoso - Las Hayas - Valle Gran Rey (11km, 4hrs, +200m/-1180m)
Your self-guided walking adventure in La Gomera continues with a trek from the high mountain atmosphere of Las Hayas down to the historically layered, bohemian coastal area of Valle Gran Rey. Start the day with a 40min transfer to Las Hayas, an area near the National Park famous for the traditional, vegetarian-friendly stews at the legendary "Doña Efigenia's" inn. The hiking trail takes you to Arure and begins a spectacular descent through the massive palm grove of Valle Gran Rey. The path passes by small, idyllic houses until it reaches the sea at La Calera. Valle Gran Rey has a rich history: it was an ancient stronghold of the Guanches (the indigenous inhabitants), later became a refuge for hippies seeking paradise, and is now a popular spot with structured tourism. The walk ends with a chance to enjoy the authentic, old fishermen's quarter of La Calera and take a final refreshing swim at Playa del Inglés.
6
Day 6: Valle Gran Rey - El Guro ravine - Valle Gran Rey (8km, 3hrs, +390m/-390m)
Today's hiking route is a challenging loop that starts from Valle Gran Rey and ascends the Barranco de Arure ravine. You head up the ravine towards El Guro, a bohemian village popular with European residents. The path is challenging at times, requiring hikers to jump from stone to stone along the stream's course. The goal is a beautiful 15-meter waterfall, offering the perfect place for a refreshing bath. The return journey follows the same riverbed path back toward Casa de la Seda, before descending along a path parallel to the road back to Valle Gran Rey.
7
Day 7: Valle Gran Rey - Imada - Roque Agando - San Sebastian (9km, 3,30hrs, +760m/-350m)
This last segment of your self-guided hiking tour in La Gomera is a tough, high-altitude climb focused on the barren southern beauty and the immense geological centerpiece of of the island. The walk begins after a 40min transfer to the hamlet of Imada. Following the PR LG 16.1 Trail, you cross several ravines up to El Azadoe. After passing through the palm-filled landscape of Lo del Gato, the relentless ascent begins towards the abandoned village of Benchijigua. The walking trail then enters the foothills of the island's central icon, Roque Agando. The route concludes at the Mirador de Tajaqué, reaching an altitude of over 1200m, where you can gaze upon the majestic Roque Agando, a phenomenal basalt rock monolith dominating the island's center. Transfer to San Sebastian.

Tips
Daily arrivals year round. The walking trails in La Gomera are varied and extensive, offering something for all fitness levels, from challenging mountain routes to gentle coastal paths. The trail network is extensive and well-signposted, often indicating distance and difficulty. While many routes provide stunning views, some can be strenuous due to steep, rocky sections and elevation changes, requiring a good level of fitness. You will experience lush, shady forests, open ridges, deep ravines, and coastal paths with ocean views. The mild, subtropical climate makes La Gomera an ideal destination for walking year-round, though some mountain routes can be more demanding due to heat and elevation. There is an option to rent hiking poles for your journey (contact us for details)!
